Charles “Charlie” Lange was as standout in track
and cross country at Midview High School. He set the Midview
sophomore record for the two mile run at 10:01. He set the Lakeland
Conference record for 3200 meters at 9:58.9 as a junior. His senior
season was a series of dual and triangular meets where he usually
swept the two distance events, and on occasion included the 800
meters in his repertoire. He won all three events in a triangular
event as Coach Ed Thompson’s Middies swept Firelands and Southview.
He also won the 1600 and 3200 meters at a dual meet with Amherst
which was the premiere program in the county at that time. At the
district track meet held at Ely Stadium his senior year, Charlie won
the 1600 by 100 meters and the 3200 by 30 meters. After that meet,
Assistant Coach Larry Dixon, referring to the upcoming Amherst
regionals, commented, that “Next week Charlie will be competing
against seven of the top nine in the state in the 1600 and four of
the top six in the 3200. He’ll really have a lot of pressure for the
first time in a while”. At those regionals, Charlie won the 3200 in
a time of 9:19.2. Showing improvement throughout his career, he
finished 2nd at 3200 meters in a time of 9:14.4 at the state track
meet.
In cross country as a junior, he finished 3rd in
the conference race, 18th in the sectionals and 10th in the district
finals. He became the first male athlete from Midview to qualify for
the state cross country meet. Sophomore Theresa Avon also qualified,
becoming the first female athlete from Midview to do so. Ironically
they each finished 32nd in a field of 150 runners in their
respective divisions. In a Chronicle Telegram article written in
2003, Charles Lange was named to the All-Time Area Cross Country
Team.
