A self-described "midget" at 5'6", Nick Walsh
stood tall as a three sport star at Midview High School in the early
60's. Nick is believed to be the only Midview athlete to captain all
three of his teams in a single year. He did so as a senior in
1962-1963.
Nick earned three letters in football, highlighted
his senior year when he quarterbacked the Middies to a 20-0 defeat
of Huron which hadn't lost a game in three years. Although missing
the first two games of the year because of an injury, the senior
captain quarterbacked the team to a winning season (6-3) that
included a 26-18 win over Amherst and a 36-8 thrashing of
arch-rival, North Ridgeville.
Earlier in the year in basketball, he captained
the Middies to three wins over archrival North Ridgeville. Two were
in the regular season and were their only losses. The third was in
tournament play with Nick scoring 17 points to lead the Middies to a
63-61 victory. That Midview team scored 103 points against
Wellington, which still stands as a school record. Nick was the
assists leader on that team and was an outstanding shooter from long
range. He was All-Conference and made the All Tournament Team.
Nick's baseball career was highlighted May 3, 1963
when his exploits became legendary. In a game against Elyria, Nick,
batting clean-up crushed a high fastball which the Chronicle
Telegram described the next day as "a monster which broke a
scoreless deadlock, cleared both left field fences, hit in the
middle of the street (Middle Avenue) beyond and bounced off the
front of a house on the other side, on one hop". Nick's team
finished 2nd in the Lakeland conference under Coach Don Schaly. He
led the team in RBI's (21) and batting average (352).
Nick continues to follow all the teams and is a
member of the GLW Broadband TV12 crew which covers the football,
basketball and volleyball games. He lives in Elyria and is a
custodian for Midview Schools. He has a son, Eric and two grandsons
and lives in Elyria.
